Elective #9

Filtering: Protection or Censorship?

Pros

1. Filters enable the student to safely search the web without fear of encountering pornographic material.

2. Parents will consider searching the web a “safe” activity and this gives the parent freedom to allow their child to search the net.

3. Filters help keep out the inappropriate pop ups and banners. These banners almost always have women dressed in revealing clothing.

4. Children just don’t have the ability to always make decisions about what is right. Why take the chance in having them exposed to something that they aren’t mature enough to handle.

5. Children may incorrectly type in a URL and unintentionally find themselves in a pornographic site.

Cons

1. Really good and useful sites can be blocked with the use of a filter simply with the use of a single word.

2. Not all sites will be caught with the filter. No filter works 100% of the time.

3. Filtering doesn’t keep children out of chat rooms.  These places are havens for predators.

4. Filtering doesn’t always take in to account that high school students  and adults search the internet and just may need access to a site that elementary students would have no need for.

5. Filtering software usually doesn’t find objectionable pictures or images.

How Can I Protect My Students When Using the Internet?

1. I can be sure to monitor students’ computer use by only allowing pre-selected websites to be accessed by the students.

Examples of filtered search tools:

Go Guardian

Alta Vista Family Filter

2. Require that all students and their parents sign an Acceptable Use Policy before being allowed to use the computer and internet.

3. Most importantly I can make sure that the students know and understand all of the rules for computer use in my classroom and that they abide by them on a daily basis.
