“Charlie Needs a Cloak”

To begin our unit on natural, human, and capital resources we will read a story by Tomie dePaola about a shepherd boy that produces a red cloak. Your assignment will include reviewing websites about Tomie dePaola and reading about his life and the many books that he has written. You will also learn about the production process and the resources needed to make the red cloak.

Activity #1

Use the following websites to answer these questions after reading about Tomie dePaola. Record answers in your Social Studies notebook.

Activity #3

(1)             Read Charlie Needs A Cloak.

(2)           List the natural resources used by Charlie.

(3)           List and describe the human resources used to make the cloak.

(4)           Identify the capital resources.

Activity #4 Visit the Kids Farm (http://www.kidsfarm.com/sheep.htm) and learn as much as you can about sheep.  Listen to the sounds they make. Write 3 facts about sheep in your journal.

 

Activity #5

(1)  Reread Charlie Needs A Cloak. You should take special note of the steps involved in making a cloak.

(2) Visit the Cotswold Woollen mill. Read about a woolen mill and learn about shearing, carding, weaving, and spinning wool. (http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/plaza/hk67/milltour.htm)

(3) Spend time now properly sequencing the steps of making a cloak. Cut out the boxes and paste them in correct order in your Social Studies notebook.

Card the wool with a carding comb.

Dye the wool with a colored dye.

Spin the wool into yarn.

Cut the wool from the sheep with shears.

Cut the cloth and sew the pieces.

Wash the wool.

Weave the yarn into cloth.
