Collaborative Projects for the Elementary Student

1. The Day I Was Born

This project is great for the elementary student.  The project is designed to help the student discover what was happening in the world on the day they were born. Students will have the opportunity to see what toys were being played with at that time and they will be able to look up their name and find out its meaning. What a great site.  I had fun typing in information about myself. I’m sure students of all ages will love this project because it allows them to identify with children just like them with the same birthday!  Date visited 3/13/06  (http://www.stphilipneri.org/teacher/dayiwasborn/)

2. Books on Tape for Kids

Children that participate in this project choose books and read them on cassette tape After the tape is made, a new book and the tape is sent to a sick child in a hospitals in the United States. Also included in the tape/book package is a piece of artwork created by the students that read the book, a letter, and a photograph of the readers. Great project for 2nd and 3rd graders.  I found this project to be very worthwhile because of its community service component. Children of this age love helping and this is the perfect project for them. Date visited. 3/20/06   (http://www.booksontapeforkids.org/)

3. Postcards from America

This project is an ongoing project that is conducted by a husband/wife team.  They travel all over the US and develop postcards from pictures that are taken with their digital camera. Students will use the ponds at their schools to find different organisms and compare their findings to students in other states. The goal of the project is to determine if the organisms found are the same throughout the United States.  Date visited 3/19/06   (http://www.k12science.org/curriculum/bucketproj)

5. Wild Weather Project

This project is designed for the 3-6th grade classroom and focuses on the weather.  The students will observe the weather complete a number of short projects using technology to record their data.  I really like this project because it allows the students to showcase their knowledge of software and use their writing skills to record data. 6. Journey North

This project will be a hit with the elementary student because they love animals. This project tracks the onset of spring with the migration patterns of the bald eagle, robin, hummingbirds, monarch butterflies, whooping crane, and the gray whale. I found this website to be one of the most beautifully designed I’ve seen. Students are able to report sightings of animals they observe. Great project.  Date visited 3/20/06   (http://www.learner.org/jnorth/)

7. Square of Life

This is a great science project for the elementary student that allows them the opportunity to explore the living and nonliving creatures that are found in their school courtyards. The students plot square meters of their school and compare the data to other schools participating in the project. Data visited 3/20/06   (http://www.k12science.org/curriculum/squareproj/index.htm)

8. Friends and Flags

This project is an interesting one that focuses on encouraging mutual respect, tolerance, and appreciation of cultural diversity.  Students will interact with children from other countries and prepare a packet at the end of the project that reflects the cultural environment of the country they are assigned to.  The children are encouraged to create artwork, posters and models if necessary.  Especially suited to elementary students.
