Teacher Created Websites

The following are two websites that I have evaluated.

Mr. Rickey's Home Page - Mr. Rickey's homepage was created for his fourth grade class at Lee Richmond Elementary School in Hanford, California.  His website provides information about the typical daily schedule, the weekly schedule, spelling words, home reading logs, homework policy, and access to his e-mail.
Commendations:  One of the features that I like about this website is that it provides clear expectations and standards of the class.  Secondly, I like that he provides a link to students' work.  Sometimes it is helpful for students and parents to see exemplars to clarify assignment instructions.  Finally,   I like how Mr. Rickey provided the weeks class schedule in chart form.  This makes it easier to use and it provides information to students who are absent.
Recommendations:  I would suggest adding graphics or clip art to the web page to make it more asthetically pleasing.  I might also add some type of  "fun" or interactive links for students to use to extend their learning.

Mrs. Parlette's Home Page-  Mrs. Parlette's Home Page was created for middle school reading students.  Her web page was used by creating by using the web temlplate on TeacherWeb.com.  Subheadings on her page include announcements, homework, FAQ's, links, a calendar, and e-mail.
Commendations: This website's layout is visually appealling.  The icons matched to the links make the page easy to navigate. She did a nice job creating her weblinks section of her page.  She has many sites that would be useful for finding and purchasing other books, as well as a links to other websites associated with her school, like the public county school site, and the public library.  Also, having an e-mail address set up with a way of parents to contact her is another great feature in her website.
Recommendations: Mrs. Parlette's Home page does not look like it has been updated since the beginning of the school year, making it pretty uneffective for students to use.  Some of her links that she has set up do not contain information like Frequently Asked Questions. Finally, there were other choices for links that she could have chosen to use that may have enhanced or her website which would have given to students more specific information about their work or handouts.

Summmary:  From completing this activity I have learned a few things.  First, if you plan on creating a website, you should first assess the purpose of creating the website and how frequently you plan on updating it.  Some of the websites I found were much more interactive, while others seemed to be abadoned after the first week of class.  Also, I found a few sites that provide template for creating websites.  I particulary liked TeacherWeb.com.  They charge a $2.50 monthly fee, but it may be worth it.
