FILTERING: THE  PROS  &  CONS

Cons

1.  Filtering software can not always filter out every inappropriate web site.

2.  Filtering software can sometimes inadvertently block websites that would be helpful or appropriate
     for educational use.

3.  Installing filtering software can be expensive and must be continually updated.

4.  Blocking internet sites could be seen as a violation of the first amendment's right to free speech.

5.  Filtering sites does not  allow students to be taught how to disseminate information, or what to do
     when they  encounter inappropriate websites.

Pro's

1.  Filtering software can block inappropriate websites and protect young audiences from viewing
      obscene pictures and texts.

2.  Filtering software can block students from some chat rooms, where sexual predators may try to
      make contact.

3.  Filtering devices can limit the number of distractions that would be caused to student's learning.

4.  Filtering devices allow parents to feel more comfortable with students using the internet.  Parents
could prohibit their child from using the internet if there were no filtering software and the student
     would not learn about technology.

5.  Providing a filtering system meets federal requirements.  By law schools must have some type of
filtering system in place in order to receive federal funding for technology.
