Searching the Web

Objective(s):

Students will use different search engines to locate websites related to an ancient Egypt topic.
Students will be able to develop search strategies to find and locate useful information about an ancient Egypt topic.

Introduction:

The internet if filled with huge amounts of information.  Even if you spent your entire life looking at websites, it would be impossible for you to view everything on the internet.  Thankfully, when you do most of your searching, you have a purpose.  Usually you want to find information about a particular topic.

Search engines help you to find what you are looking for on the internet.  There are many search engines available to use.

Activity:
    For this activity you will be using different search engines to locate websites related to your ancient Egypt topic.  In order to make your search productive, first you should think about the words that you will use to find your topic.  You will want to try different search terms to see if it gives you different or better results.

Visit the website called, Search Tips.
Read over the suggestions for creating search terms to use on a search engine.
You will use one of these search tips while you are trying to find ancient Egypt websites.
 

Assignment:

Select at least 3 of the search engines listed below.
Click on the link to go directly to the search engine.
Create 3 search terms to use with each search engine.
Write the title and website address of at least 2 websites that you think would be helpful to use while researching ancient Egypt.
Finally, complete the reflection questions at the end of the assignment.

Worksheet shows three search engines were used and 3 search terms were developed for each search engine.  Nine or more websites are listed with addresses.  Reflection questions demonstrates an understanding of the different types of search tools available. Worksheet shows at least 2 search engines used with at least 2 different search terms developed.  Six to seven websites were cited with addresses.  Reflection question shows an understanding  of the variety of search tools available. Worksheet shows 1-2 search engines used and only 2 different search terms were developed.  Three to five websites and addresses were cited.  Reflection question does not show a clear understanding of the different search terms available. Worksheet shows a minimal amount of  work complete.  One search engine was used and only 1 or 2 search terms were used.  Three of fewer websites and addresses were cited. Reflection question incomplete or does not show an understanding of different search tools.
