Best All Around
Google is one of the biggest search
engines available. It is the first place I turn to for searches and always have
luck finding information. Google allows
you to search for images, complete advanced searches and use directories. http://www.google.com
Runner Up
Yahoo is another great search
engine. Yahoo lets you search directly or
by human-edited directories. The
directory is organized by categories and helps to guide and narrow your
search. Yahoo also provides news and
e-mail. http://www.yahoo.com/
Meta-Search Engines
Vivisimo was a wonderful meta-search
engine. The special feature that I
liked was that it has a cluster search engine, which organizes searches into
categories. It also tells you the number
of matches for each category. http://www.vivisimo.com/
Dogpile was my first introduction to
multiple search engines. Dogpile has
recently been revised and updated.
Dogpile accesses major search engines like Google, Yahoo, AtlaVista, and
AskJeeves. The search engine provides a
tutorial, results by categories, and advances searches. http://www.dogpile.com/
News
ALLTheWeb News allows you to search for
news from a variety of news sites across the web. It also allows you to search in different languages. The advanced search lets you narrow your
search to a specific type of news-local, international, entertainment. Also, AllTheWeb gives you a chance to customize
preferences to filter certain words. http://www.alltheweb.com/?cat=news
AltaVista News is a fantastic search
engine for news. The search tool
provides you with categories to choose what type of news. AltaVista News also lets you narrow your
topic by region, news source and time span. Major news sources include The New
York Times, Newsweek and The Washington Post.

For Kids
Yahooligans is a kid friendly search
engine that looks fun and inviting. It
is designed for kids ages 7-12 and looks perfect for middle school
students. The sites have been reviewed
and handpicked by editors. Also,
Yahooligans does not allow banner advertising.
Another kid-friendly perk to
this search engine is it will not forward or link you to another search engine
if there is no match for your search. http://www.yahooligans.com
KidsClick! is a search engine designed
and maintained by librariarns. The home
page of the search provides categories or topics arranged by the Dewey Decimal
Classification System. The site also
contain a tutorial for conducting web search and provides links to other
kid-friendly search engines and databases.
Again there is no advertising. http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/KidsClick!/

Ask Jeeves is a search engine where a
question is asked and the search engine answers by giving a list of possible

friendly, the butler will fetch your results for you. Jeeves also has a separate images search engine and Jeeves for
kids. http://www.askjeeves.com
All Experts is another search
engine where you ask a question and the
