Overview of Maryland MESA Program
Introduction
The Maryland Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Program is a structured multi-year pre-college program sponsored by The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Morgan State University, The University of Maryland College Park, local school systems, and businesses throughout Maryland.
Maryland MESA's vision is a superior education process that enables all Maryland students achieve and contribute their full potential in the areas of mathematics, engineering, science, and technology.
History/Goal
With the support of Anne Arundel County Public Schools , Baltimore City and County Public Schools , Howard, Frederick and St Mary's County Public Schools , technical employers, and universities, Maryland MESA has been in operation since 1976. In cooperation with the Maryland State Department of Education and local education agencies, Maryland MESA has established programs in 112 Maryland public schools: forty-two schools in Baltimore City, seven in Howard County, seventeen in Baltimore County, three in Anne Arundel County, two in St. Mary's County, and one high school each in Prince George's and Frederick Counties.
Maryland MESA's program is designed to prepare participating students for the world of work and/or college and university-level engineering, mathematics, and science curricula. Ultimately, Maryland MESA's goal is to increase the number of minority and female engineers, scientists, mathematicians, and related professionals at both the technical and management levels, fields in which minorities and women are underrepresented.
Goal
The goal is to support students: Maryland MESA will be the driving force in encouraging and assisting all Maryland students, especially, students of African American, Hispanic and American Indian descent, and females toward mathematics, engineering, and science careers. Student interests, skills, and abilities in mathematics, engineering, and science will be fully developed. Maryland MESA will accomplish this through a partnership of school systems, colleges and universities, industry and business, government, community organizations, families, and alumni.
