Today we are going to debate how you feel about students saying the Pledge of Allegiance every morning in school.  Some people feel that it is unconstitutional to say the Pledge of Allegiance in school because of the word “God”.  You need to state your opinions and feelings as well as back them up with the research you will do during this activity.  You need to choose a standpoint being either, yes, students should say the Pledge or no, I don’t feel that students should have to pledge the flag in school.  There are no “in betweens” on this assignment.  When we are finished gathering the information we will split the class up into groups and have a debate.

Read at least 3 of the articles from the links that are provided to get a good sense of what you are going to argue.  One of those articles must be the opposite of your stance.  So if you think that students should say the pledge, 2 articles must have the same viewpoint as you and one has to be against saying the pledge.  You may print the articles out and highlight main ideas, you may cut and paste main ideas and highlights onto another document, or you may take notes on what you want to say.  Remember, you want to prove your point to win the debate.  10 extra bonus points or candy (you choose) goes to the members of the winning debate team!
