Collaboration

Dr. Seuss Internet Project – This project is designed for elementary students in grades 1-5. The project requires that students research Dr. Seuss, write about their favorite story characters and illustrate their writing using computer media. Students are encouraged to work collaboratively on this assignment and complete the task by posting to an online server. Due to the language oriented approach to this assignment, it would best be taught and completed throughout a series of time frames dedicated to this activity during a Language Arts time period. What is it like to live where you do? – This project is designed for students at the first – second grade level. Students will love being a part of this project! Here they are able to communicate with other students from around the globe about the area in which they live. They can share geographic features, climate, diet – anything that pertains to how and where they live. Students will love reading about other cultures, and will enjoy meeting and making new friends. This assignment would do well incorporated into the geography portion of our Social Studies curriculum, as well as incorporated into our week dedicated to the story “Me On the Map,” taught during ILA. First Annual Children’s Academy Awards - This project was designed for children in the elementary to middle school grades to log into the site in order to participate in a nation wide voting for best actor, best actress, best animated film, best original movie song, and best picture; just like the real Oscar Awards! After polling is completed, students from Dove Elementary School will tally the results of the poll to provide results as a whole, as well as based on geographic region. This activity would be fun to set up as an independent activity center, but then, as a first grade teacher, I would revisit it once tallying is completed to practice graphing the information and compare and interpret the information presented. Newsday - In this project, students will have the opportunity to write practice their writing and editing skills as they write newspaper articles and publish them to the internet. This activity would be most suitable for upper elementary and middle school students. Although I am unable to use this in my first grade classroom, it would be fun to complete a project like this with a group of kids interested as a part of an after school program, or to incorporate it into a lesson I would teach as a media specialist. Writing Wizards – This project was designed for children in grades two – four to work on creating their own fairy tales. The students will work together to complete the writing of different portions of an original fairy tale. This activity would work well in our fairy tales unit during Writing. Done with teacher guidance in small groups, this activity would be a definite hit! Date visited: 5/22/06.
