Algebra

 

Algebra Help – Algebra Help is a great site for parents trying to help their son or daughter at home.  It provides lesson (tutorials) and an equation calculator that lets you plug in an equation and the computer does the work for you.  This is a great tool to check a student’s work at home. Algebra Solutions – This site is a useful resource for teachers.  There are mini-lessons on basic topics of pre-algebra and algebra. Each topic is accompanied with worksheet link for you to use in class.  The best part about this web page is the checker.  You can enter in an equation and the computer will show you step by step how the problem should be completed.  Date Visited- 9/28/03

Algebra Problem of the Week- The problem of the week is a small challenge for students to complete and send in their solutions to see if they answered correctly.  This would be perfect for a teacher to use as a warm-up once a week in class and   would help keep the students interested. Teacher2Teacher- Teacher2Teacher is a site that lets teachers ask questions and discuss problems they are having in school.  The link is actually a specific question about teaching algebra in middle school.  At the bottom of the web page there is a place that allows you to reply or submit a new question. Teaching Algebra- This page provides insight on the ever-changing curriculum and assessment in Algebra.  It talks about the National standards and how they are being met.  Although there are no specific suggestions for use in the classroom,  it is something that every teacher should read so they are able to better understand curriculum. Worksheet Generator- In a hurry?  Need a new worksheet without hand writing it?  I have found a great tool for you.  This site will allow you create your own worksheet or use another teacher’s worksheet.  Currently, you can only do simple math worksheets and foil, the website promised more options will be available soon.  Date Visited 9/28/03

Geometry

Geometry Through Art- This website is a geometry teacher’s dream.  It lists all the materials needed, helpful tips, hands-on activities, worksheets, and a lot of lessons.  The only problem is you are required to have Geometer’s Sketchpad on your computer.  Once you have installed that on your computer, the opportunities are endless and students can learn Geometry through art. Shaping-up- “Shaping up” refers to shaping up your lesson planning and how to include technology into effective planning.  This was designed to be used as an in-service for Geometry teachers looking to get their planning in order and putting technology at the top of the agenda.  Date Visited-9/28/03

Techniques, Strategies and Activities in Teaching Geometry- This site is very interesting and takes a truly positive approach to teaching geometry.  The designer of the site wants geometry to be taught using the element of surprise.  If you are tried of teaching the same old way, this site will give you excellent pointers on how to spruce up your lessons. Statistics

Data Analysis and Probability- This is a site full of lessons for the beginning stages of statistics. They all follow the NCTM standards and include the data with the lessons.  As an added feature to the site, it gives you the best places to find any type of data.  Date Visited- 9/28/03

Logic and Reasoning- The lesson involves using blocks to sort and classify using reasoning skills.  It also uses Venn Diagrams to show the logic and commonalities the blocks share.  This is a great group activity and if you do not like this lesson, you can find others by clicking on the main menu button at the bottom of the web page. Internet Lessons- Statistics and the Internet are a great way to create lessons.  The Internet constantly updating and includes current Internet Statistics.  Whether you are looking for a lesson involving Basketball scores or the Weather you will be able to find an interesting way of approaching statistics using the Internet.  Date Visited 9/28/03

Calculus

Awesome Library- The awesome part about this library is that it does not contain just lessons, but worksheets and other resources as well.  You are able to find many different topics in calculus and use the lessons on an everyday basis.  The site also has a few lessons that use calculus in physics problems.   Date Visited- 9/28/03

Calc101- This site is great for parents and students looking for some free tutoring after school hours.  You are able to check your homework, study for tests and quizzes, and find where you went wrong with the calculus problem. There is a feature on this page that can show you step by step what to do in certain kinds of math problems.  It is also important to mention that this site can be found in Spanish, French and Dutch.  Date Visited- 9/28/03

Calculus Lesson Plans- Teaching AP Calc?  Need help with lesson Planning?  This is the site for you.  There is a list of lessons that essentially goes through the calculus class day by day.  There are also many worksheet and assignments to help you plan your class in the right direction and help your students succeed on the AP Test in May.  Date Visited- 9/28/03

Students Classroom- This is a government web page that has a lot of information and fun games to help students in math and science. Parents and students can create graphs, play games, solve teasers, and even learn about mathematicians.  It’s a fun and interactive way to keep up the important math skills.  Date Visited- 9/28/03

Mathematical Lesson- This is a favorite site of mine.  It really has a lot of fun lessons that can be used in the classroom.  I have used many of the activities in my own classroom and the students enjoyed the activities.  It has a section for students and a teacher’s guide to correlate with the lesson.  These lessons are highly recommended and are interesting. Academy Curricular Exchange- The exchange value here is endless.  When you find a page designed specifically for grades 9-12 and detailed lessons you have struck gold.  The lessons on the site are detailed and even have a section on how to tie your lesson together.  It is a great way to have the perfect closure to an interesting lesson.  Date Visited- 9/28/03

History of Mathematics- This is a useful tool for teachers who ware looking for background information for their subject material.  This site offers many topics from Pi to the mathematics Hall of fame.
