Recommending Tree Species

Using the Hardiness Zone Map and other resources.

Introduction: The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has developed a map the gives guide lines on the recorded low temperatures in areas of the United States.  Using this map will allow you to select plants that will grow in a specific area (they can withstand the low temperatures). Maryland has a tremendous diversity in Zones therefore plants that we can grow in Garrett County are different than the ones grown in Frederick County. This map is only one of the many resources to consult when making planting recommendations.  Some areas have selected tree planting lists, and all general landscaping considerations should be included in the decision.  In this lesson we will explore the Hardiness Zone Map and other resources to make planting decisions in the Nursery/Landscape Industry.

Information – Review the Hardiness Zone Map at the U.S. National Arboretum site and develop an understanding of the map, how it works, and determine what zone you live in, in Maryland.  This is your number one resource for the activity.  The remaining sites will give detailed information on tree species.

You may use the following hard resources in addition to the internet resources:

Manual of Woody Landscape Plants, Dirr

Landscape Plants, Bridwell, Delmar Publishing

The internet sites for the activity are:

Question – What trees are appropriate to plant in a specified location?

Activity - Analyze the list below and evaluate each tree determining if it is appropriate to plant in Montgomery County Maryland.  Once you have selected the tree species make a recommendation of one or two specific trees that a homeowner could plant in their own yard under existing electric lines.  Take into consideration roots, height, flowering, and other landscape considerations as appropriate.
