Creating Rubrics –
Improving Student Performance
Goal –
Students will
develop effective rubrics to assess hard skills in horticulture classroom
instruction.
Introduction-
Grading
can be one of the most challenging items for teachers. Grading students on hard skills like creating
corsages, arrangements, taking cutting and watering greenhouse plants provide
teachers an even greater challenge. As
the age of accountability grows teachers need to demonstrate some type of a
standard for students to meet. Using a
grading rubric in these cases can provide both a great way to grade, and
provide clear performance standards.
Activities-
Using the links below and completing an
Internet search, visit as many rubric websites as you can and review their

Using your
research, create a rubric for a hard skill activity.
Assignments-
1. Review the power point Why Use
Grading Rubric. Construct a
well-developed statement explaining how rubrics would be useful in your
classroom.
2. Develop a list of 5 recommended sites that
you think are good resources for creating rubrics. Searches including the words,
teacher created rubrics, rubrics for assessment have yielded good results.
3. Create a rubric for a hard skill activity
in your classroom. Make sure the
activity is action oriented, you will be assessing performance, not using the
rubric to evaluate a submitted response from the student.
Submission-
Submit your activities in an html file formant to the hand-in folder designated for this assignment.
