Kid Sites

This kid friendly search engine lists over 600 hundred subjects.  Students can narrow the search by clicking on a specific subject, alphabetical list, or complete an advanced search. The return sites list brief annotations, images, reading level, and subject.  This site can help students develop research skills because they are forced to choose a specific subject and narrow a topic by selecting key words related to their subject. 

 

Ask Jeeves the Butler anything you want in the form of a question.  He will find the information you are looking for.  If Jeeves knows the answer to your question he will link you to other kid friendly websites.  You will also be given other search engines that contain the topic you are searching.

 

Meta Search Sites

This Metasearch site allows an information seeker to search by key word or complete an advanced search.  The search engine will return direct hits as well as links to other search engines containing the same topic.  Your topics are returned by cluster results.  You can click on a specific cluster result to view the cluster resources.  A resource may give you a direct link to a URL or it will tell you the name of search engines and how many resources contain the subject you are seeking. 

 

Kartoo is an international search engine that uses visual maps to show results.  Kartoo does the searching for you so you do not have to click on any links.  All you have to do is type your key word and click ok.  You can place the mouse over any of the websites that were returned from the query, and a brief annotation is given. This meta search engine is very stimulating, you can even download the kartoolbar from the website for all you super searchers.

 

 

 

Media Search Engines

- The North Central Regional Technology in Education Consortium site is a wonderful tool for finding pictures to use with your lessons.  The amazing picture machine will list all pictures and provide a brief annotation on each site.  This site is also a valuable resource for teachers planning to use technology in the classroom.  There are lesson plan ideas, rubrics, and templates to guide you in the process.

 FindSounds is a search engine that will locate pictures by key word.  You can even search by sound format and sound category. 

 

Health Sites

Health Finder is a guide to locate health related information on the web.  Choose to search by using the alphabetized library or customize the search to fit your needs.  Healthcare news, options for care, directories, and online checkups are all available on this site.  The site also has a kid’s menu and the ability to be viewed in Spanish.

 WebMdHealth is a search engine for all health related topics.  You can also join WebMd for Medical Information, Member Services, and Wellness Tips. You can search the site by entering a keyword.  The site will list related articles and website that match your keyword. A brief annotation is also given to summarize exactly what is on the site.

 

Directory Search Engines

 This IPL is your best choice for an online library.   You can search for Internet resources by selecting a subject from the collection.  The work has been done for you.  The IPL Site will list online resources and articles pertaining to the subject you entered. Other options available to you on this site include a reading room, ready references, and a link to the Kids Internet Public Library.
