Adding Fractions with Different Denominators

Course Module

Goals-

Students will examine a set of online links that are developed to enhance their knowledge of mathematical concepts. Student will use and develop strategies to solve math problems.

Overview-

When I was in school I always disliked the days my teacher would stand up in front of the class for what seemed like hours and explain a concept to me.  Maybe my teacher thought that each time he repeated the explanation, I would retrieve the information.  If you are like me in anyway, I like to study and learn math through visual and physical means.  I can study a visual example and can demonstrate how to solve a math problem.  The internet has a wide range of tutorials and online examples that explain mathematical concepts, in such a way that you can understand.  You will get a chance to examine several websites that explain how to add fractions with different denominators.  You will use these websites to create your own explanation and example on how to add fractions with different denominators.

Reading-

View the links that explain how to solve adding fractions with different denominators.   Study the examples and decide which site you would pick as having the best example.  The following questions should help guide your decision:

How do the graphics help me to understand how to solve problems with fractions?

How does the arrangement of the steps help me to understand how to solve problems with fractions?

Do the steps use language that I can understand?

Links-

AAAMath- http://www.aaamath.com/B/fra66kx2.htm

This site contains lessons on any math concept, by grade level.  Students can view the tutorial, complete a practice section, and play games related to curriculum     content.

Mathisfun.com- http://www.mathsisfun.com/fractions_addition.html

This site contains online games, activities, lessons, and tutorials for many math concepts.  The tutorials are very appealing and organized for easy viewing.

Kidsolr.com- http://www.kidsolr.com/math/fractions.html

This site is a tutorial on adding fractions.  The tutorials use kid friendly images and are easy to follow. You will need to click on several pages to gain an understanding on how to add fractions.

Gomath.com- http://www.gomath.com/exercises/algebra.php

This site contains a tutorial for adding fractions using algebraic rules/formulas.  You can type in a problem and view how to get the answer.  The steps are listed, but you might have to click several different menu buttons to get to the correct page.

Activity-

Choose two sites that explained the concept in such a way that you could easily understand how to add fractions with different denominators.

ü      Use Microsoft Word to write the steps from both sites as well as a small paragraph that summarizes the 3 questions you previously answered.

ü      Create a diagram labeled with the steps you will take to solve adding fractions with different denominators.

ü      Write the steps so that someone else can easily understand how add fractions with different denominators.
