Best of the Search Engines

Best General Search Engines

  1. Teoma – this is my new favorite search engine.  Not only is it easy to use, but on the right side, it gives suggestions as to ways to refine the search.  It also has a lot less sponsored links than some search engines.   www.teoma.com

  1. Google – this is another great general search engine.  I love the fact that I can just type in what I want and not have to deal with any nonsense.  Regardless of my search topic or how broad my terms are, Google always seems to find what I need.  www.google.com

Best Searches for Kids

  1. Yahooligans – this is the most kid friendly page that I found.  It is very user friendly and non-intimidating in format.  While it seems to be visually busy, it is very easy to navigate around.   The results are listed in order by relevance and it seems easy for kids to choose the one they want.  www.yahooligans.com

  1. Kids Click – this page was set up by librarians, and provides some pretty secure filters.  While it is not as visually friendly, the results come back with a nice description of the web sites found, in real language, not computer language.  http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/KidsClick!/

Best Travel Search Engines

  1. Travelocity – this is a great travel search engine.  You can easily manipulate all of the details of your trip and change your mind just as quickly.  It also works out packages, like airfare, hotel and car rentals. Travelocity sends emails out with great travel deals.  www.travelocity.com

  1. All Cheap Fares – this is a newer site to me.  It’s also easy to navigate and change around.  The site offers packages similar to Travelocity as well.  www.allcheapfares.com

Best News Search Engines

  1. Newslink – this engine is fantastic!  It offers links to major newspapers as well as a great number of college and specialty papers too.  This engine also allows you to search for radio and TV news in the same fashion.  www.newslink.org/menu.html

  1. Newspapers US and World Wide – this search engine is great!  All you have to do is select the state/country you want and it gives you a list of all of the papers in that region.  Those links take you directly to the online versions of that areas paper.  www.refdesk.com/paper.html

Best of Maps/Directions Search Engines

  1. MSN Maps and Directions – this site does a nice job providing detailed, easy to read maps, simple directions and various listings.  Once it maps a location for you, it also provides links to city guides and weather for that area.  www.mappoint.msn.com

  1. Maps On Us – another very generous map search engine.  This one allows you to add or subtract details to the maps they provide.  Maps On Us also provides links to area information, but not as much.  www.mapsonus.switchboard.com
