Summary of the European take-over of China:
What were the two developments that led to major changes in China's relations with the West? How did Europeans attempt to take China over, and what was China's response to this, thereby initializing the Opium Wars? Also, define kowtow. What were the extent of the unequal treaties? Also, define extraterritoriality. Define what a sphere of influence is, and who controlled what regions of China. Also, complete the map study questions on pp. 345 to add to your knowledge of this subject. What was the Open Door Policy? Why was it instituted?
Summary of the Revolutionary Period:
What types of reforms (changes) were instituted in China during this time? Who were the Fists of Righteous Harmony, and what did they do to foreigners? What was the West's response to them?
Summary of the Nationalist/Communist Period:
Who was Dr. Sun Yatsen, and what were his three principals? What is Communism and what are its major ideas for governance? How did the new leader, Chiang Kai-shek, treat the communists in China? Provide three examples. How were the Communists able to defeat the Nationalists eventually? Why did so many of China's people relate to Communism? Provide three examples.
