Then, when it is time, you are to teach the opposite group designated by me. Finally, you are to assess the group that you teach by constructing an assessment tool (quiz of some sort) to determine whether you have successfully taught them.

You are to research the following information and prepare to teach it to the opposite group. Information can be found on pp. 350--368 in the textbook. You will also peruse the articles.

  • Summary of the Communist take-over in China:
  1. What is Communism and what are its major ideas for governance?
  2. What was Karl Marx's ideas and how did Mao adapt these to China's situation? Also, define proletariat.
  3. What is a totalitarian state and what did Chairman Mao do to institute order to the country?
  4. What is propaganda, and provide two examples of propaganda under Chairman Mao's leadership.
  5. What were Chairman Mao's three revolutionary goals, and what were the obstacles that stifled each goal?
  6. What were the goals and ideas behind collective farms?
  7. What was life like on a commune? Provide three details.
  8. Why did the commune system fail? Provide three details.
  9. During the disaster of the commune failure, what was the role of Mao's red guards during the Cultural Revolution? Who were they and what did they do?
  10. When Mao died, who took over and what were his four modernizations? Make sure you describe each.

  • Summary of the changing social customs within China
  1. What replaced Confucian ideas in China? What replaced filial piety? What did it take for Chinese children to gain acceptance into a college or university?
  2. What happened to the social classes in China? What really happened due to the changes?
  3. How did the new Communism change beliefs concerning the respect for ancestors? Provide three details. Was there resistance to this? Explain.
  4. What was the view of Communism concerning the relationships between men and women? What is the new role of women in society? Provide three details.
  5. How did China's government deal with the country's extremely large population?
  6. What were some of the educational reforms (changes) that took place? Provide three details.
