German-American Day 2006 at McDaniel College Back to GAD
October 17, 2006

Workshop A:
"The Art of Playing the Mundharmonika - Hans On"
with Walter “Wale” Liniger ( www.bluesprof.com )

The modern-day harmonica is based on an ancient Asian reed instruments, the cheng.
In 1857 the harmonica was made popular by German clockmaker Matthias Hohner (http://www.hohnerusa.com/). Over the following years it became a favorite instrument with soldiers in the American Civil War; it traveled westward with the im/migrants. Today the instrument’s voice is heard in nearly every musical genre. In this workshop we will learn some basic breathing patterns and sounds which will allow us to play the snappy tune “I Love the Way You Walk.”

This is a unique opportunity for students of German to learn more about the Mundharmonika in a workshop with an incredibly gifted musician and Blues professor. Mr. Walter "Wale" Liniger, a native of Switzerland, is a Distinguished Lecturer with the Institute for Southern Studies, University of South Carolina. More information about him in German and English can be found at his website: http://www.bluesprof.com/

This is a hands-on workshop and the first 30 students who register for the workshop will receive a free harmonica sponsored by the German Embassy and Hohner USA. All other students beyond the first 30 to register must purchase the harmonica for a discounted price of $5. Please bring the money with you and give it to the instructor.
