Jeff Ziegler

Goals:

Students will be able to read and comprehend various fitness programs and be able to recognize who the program is geared towards and who would benefit from such a program. Students will also be able to choose a program for themselves based on personal preference and fitness level.

Content Overview:

A person’s individual fitness level is a very important factor in the game of life. It is clear, through research, that longevity is directly correlated to exercise and fitness. The more you exercise and stay physically active, the longer you will live a healthy life and possibly add years onto your overall life. With all the different fitness and exercise programs out there to target specific audiences, it is very important to find one that fits a person’s fitness level and preferences. The internet provides endless information on fitness activities and programs to get anyone at any fitness level active.

Why is this important?

Fitness and health is becoming not only a hot topic in society today, but it is also becoming a necessity. The obesity in children has increased tremendously. Physical activity is being shunned in some areas of the country and a personal responsibility for ones health and physical well-being seems to be non-existent. While fitness programs and physical activity can aid those trying to improve their overall health, diet also plays a role and should be looked at as well.

Reading and Discussion:

These following websites will provide you with some basic information on exercise and fitness. They will share with you the most recent and hot topics in fitness and exercise. You can read about certain programs and learn about some statistics at well that are sure to blow you away.

Each group will come up with a power point presentation that will inform the class of the specific program assigned. The presentation should be no more then 15 minutes long and every student must speak and do their share of research.

Group 1:

P90X has become a huge rage in the fitness world today. I want you to do some research on this program and become experts on P90X. I want you to take a look at this specific program and answer the following:

1)   What is attractive about this program?

2)   Who is this program geared too? Sex? Age?

3)   What are the benefits of this program?

4)   What areas of fitness does this program cover?

5)   What are the results of those who have completed this program?

6)   Are there any negatives or downfalls to this program?

Group 2:

Many people are turning to Yoga as their main source of fitness. I would like you to do some research on the history of Yoga and become experts on it. I want you use any resources and be able to answer the following questions:

1)   Who does this program appeal to and why?

2)   What is attractive about this program?

3)   What are the overall benefits of this program?

4)   What areas of fitness does this program cover?

5)   What are the results of those who have completed this program?

6)   Are there any negatives or downfalls to this program?

Activity 2

Students will write an informative paper on a fitness program of their choice and follow the guidelines and questions I have given them. Programs should be approved by teacher before beginning research.

Now that you have learned to research a fitness program and learn about it inside and out, I would like you to find a program that you would like to take part in. This can be any type of program that you wish, but you must be able to give me the following information:

1)   Name and history of program.

2)   What the goal of the program is.

3)   Why does it appeal to you?

4)   A summary of the program, steps, levels, and progression.

5)   What makes this program better then the others?

Students should turn their papers in as a Word document to my email at teacher@gmail.com
