This test will have an ECR, and you haven't written one in a while. During our research unit, we studied, "how computers are changing the way we communicate." Related to this area of study is the study of video games and violence. You've likely heard opinions about this issue at some point in time. Now, I'd like you to read some of what others have said and take a stand on the issue. At the end, you will write a persuasive ECR.

(NOTE: This activity will take more time than the others; therefore, you may want to break it into chunks for yourself by reading a few of the articles, taking a break, and coming back. You might also want to take another quick break before writing.)

1. First, go to this site from the American Psychological Association to read a brief overview of what studies have said concerning video games and violence. (http://www.apa.org/releases/videogames.html)

2. Next, go to this site from USA Today to read one medical advisor's view of both the good and bad of video games. (http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/spotlight/2001-01-19-video.htm)

3. Just so we don't get too hung up on external media, please look at this site, which contains an interview conducted by a reporter for XBox Advanced with a California Lawmaker and Child Pyschologist. (http://xbox.advancedmn.com/article.php?artid=4310)

4. For an opinion from within the industry, please read the editorial at this site. (http://gc.advancedmn.com/article.php?artid=1414)

5. Finally, please take a look at this site from the National Institute on Media and the Family. (http://www.mediafamily.org/facts/facts_effect.shtml)

You have now finished the background reading for the topic of the ECR.


Your challenge is to form an opinion about who should be prevented from playing violent video games (what age people, if any) and why, who should be responsible for this prevention, and how it should be done. (If you decide that no age group should be prevented from playing the games, you will need to flesh out your ECR with support for why you believe this, rather than discuss who should prevent play and how.) Remember, this is a PERSUASIVE ECR, so you're trying to convince me.

The final two sites will link you to reminders of what it means to write a good ECR. Please review them if you need to before writing.
