Highlights and Map of my Dream Media Center

Reflection:

Viewing the media center as the hub of learning in the school, my peers and I created a floor plan and brief description of what our dream high school media center would be if there were no financial constraints. As the group member most familiar with image editing, I headed up the project, and the result is linked above.

One aspect of the media program integral to success is the center itself. The physical space in which we conduct our educational transactions can greatly influence our capabilities and our feelings--students and teachers alike--about the process. All physical aspects--from attractive book covers to adequate lighting--must be considered, but the most important among these considerations are the flexibility of the floor plan, the variety of spaces available in the center, and their utility in accommodating several groups of various sizes when space is maximized. As such, our floor plan includes various spaces for individual, small group, and large group meetings as well as specialized spaces--such as a listening lab and a TV studio--for particular activities. In order to ensure safety, we considered the angles of all shelving and their visibility from staff desks, and in order to capitalize on space and natural lighting, we included a 2-story ceiling with a skylight and mezzanine. For safety, utility, and comfort, I believe our plans are well-suited to a high school media center.
