Reflection:

Knowledge is Power. I believe that whole-heartedly. To withhold information from a patron for any reason is to disenfranchise and disempower him or her, an act which is antithetical to all of my beliefs about education. It is for this reason that I will abide by policies and procedures that uphold intellectual freedom and will not engage in censorship of any kind. In addition, it is as much my patrons' right to be private about what they are learning as is the right to learn itself. No fear of judgment, punishment, or other negative consequence should need accompany the exposition of one's informational interests; however, these feelings are warranted. In order to maintain privacy and uphold the rights of my patrons to privately study information of their choosing, I will not print lists of checked out materials or submit to requests for patrons' library records. My patrons must, at all times, be able to trust me with their information needs, and ensuring that procedures are in place to protect their rights to information is essential to that trust. The link above is anchored to part of my vision for a media center and, below that, to my personal statement on intellectual freedom, which is in accordance with similar statements issued by the American Library Association. Both of these policies will help to uphold the intellectual freedom of all of the media center's patrons.
