Reflection:

Teachers often tell students that school doesn't start at the first bell and end at the last bell--learning happens continuously. Accordingly, teachers assign homework and projects for their students to complete in order to supplement school day learning. These tasks often require the use of resources available through the Media Center; however, access to the Media Center resources does rely on the bells. Perhaps it is available an hour before the first bell and an hour after the last bell, but regardless, students can access it only during limited hours. As such, the question arises, "How can the Media Specialist provide remote access to resources?" Electronic resources provide the flexibility of time and transport needed to get students connected to resources outside of the school day. One way of providing these resources to students is to ensure that reasonable amounts of the library budget are spent on subscriptions to online databases. Once available, the databases can be listed with usernames and passwords on bookmarks for students to take home. When a student begrudgingly leaves the media center as am I closing down for the day, I can hand him/her the bookmark and suggest research be conducted that way. On the mock bookmark I created, I included not only school databases but also mention of the public library databases available. Although research resources make up much of what is unavailable to students outside school hours, sometimes students are absent from lessons for legitimate reasons and need remote access to the missed information. Last year, many of my English students missed review for an upcoming assessment because they were taking state standardized tests during class time. With this in mind, I created a series of online activities for them to complete as review. Unfortunately, both of these means of remote access involve the use of Internet accessible computers, which some students do not have available in the home. This circumstance would require them to travel to the nearest public library in order to access the material, and while not ideal, it is the best that can be done. Although the school Media Center cannot stay open eighteen hours a day, some of the resources can be made available, if not convenient.
