Goals

Understanding that you do not need to use outlines in drawings to get shape

Content Overview

Shapes in real life are not made out of lines like you see in everyday cartoons they are derived from variance of shading and colors. So for this lesson the students will be getting messy with vine/compressed charcoal.

Discussion/Questions

Why do you think we draw using outlines?

How can we get out of that realm?

Is outlining a good or bad thing?

What were the first line drawings?

What is the need to not only know the grey scale but to see colors that might not be the main colors of the sky?

Activities

For this activity the students will each hang a shirt on the wall with a weird angle or the teacher could hang one or two shirts for the whole class to use. Every student will receive charcoal and different types of erasers. The idea being using the charcoal to shade the entire paper then using the eraser to take away the shadows and add highlights. Then after use the charcoal to bring back the shadows by blending. There should be no bold distinct lines used.

Assignments

Two different drawing can be made. Start with a shaded piece of paper and working with the eraser and the next being working with charcoal right from the start. The work should be taken home to work on between classes and at least two days be used for the lesson. The idea being getting the students to learn to keep the image in their mind and then seeing how close it might come.

Assignment Specification

The only real specification is that the work be in black and white and lines be brought to a minimum.

Submission

The only real submission will be handing the works to the teacher after a group discussion and critique of the works.

Rubric

The rubric for this assignment is very basic being on a 1 to 5 scale. One being the complete negligence and not caring about the work and 5 being complete understanding and use and time put into the work.
