META SEARCH ENGINE TYPES 

 

VIVISIMO located at http://vivisimo.com/ is a great tool for high school students and adults alike. This site gathers information from other major search engines for a comprehensive look into your search term. The best feature of VIVISIMO is that information is organized into categories automatically. News, shopping on eBay, and government links are available.

 

ITHAKI is found at http://www.ithaki.net/. This engine is the most global, available in 14 languages and offers country specific search. Students needing to access information for projects and/or research should find this source very helpful. Very diversely populated schools will benefit from this service.

 

           

 

 

KID  SAFE SEARCH ENGINES

KIDSCLICK---A database collection of over 6400 sites authored by librarians can be found at

http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/KidsClick!/ The reason behind the development of this search engine is allowing the librarian to guide their younger users to age appropriate and valuable web sites.  Resources are found in Science & Math, The Arts, Weird & Mysterious, Computers and the Internet, Literature, and other topics that are school related.

KIDS.NET.AU is a search engine that is run by volunteers. 14 countries are listed by which a child can “go local” and find all sorts of material pertinent to that particular country and subject matter. This engine is activated by typing http://www.kids.net.au.  Resources cover pre-school to teens.

 

         

 

TRAVEL SEARCH ENGINES

 

 GLOBAL LEARNING SEMESTERS http://www.globalsemesters.com/programs.html will inform the viewer of program descriptions, fees and financial aid, policies and admission requirements. Semester, summer and full time programs are offered. Full time programs are for undergrad and graduate studies.

STUDY ABROAD DIRECTORY is accessed at http;//www.studyabroaddirectory.com/search.cfm.  This site offers movement for students who wish to take advantage of study abroad by offering a program search, travel resources, and scholarship search. An example of what an interested individual can see and learn about happens when a country is clicked on and college information is provided. A valuable tool for high school librarians to provide.

 

                 

 

GOVERNMENT SEARCH ENGINES

 

*FIRST GOV FOR KIDS is on the web at http://www.kids.gov/. Once you gain access onto this site, you will be linked to Federal kids’ places that are all grouped together by subject. PDF version is available.  What a great place for students to gain information from a wide range of topics such as geography to composing a graph on the homework page.

 

GOOGLE UNCLESAM is found at http://www.google.com/unclesam.  Once on this page a student can click onto http;//www.fedstats.gov/kids.html and have access to special web pages filled with facts,project ideas, and games and career choices that will satisfy elementary and high school students alike. A great tool for the librarian to have o hand.

 

                

 

NEWS SEARCH ENGINES

YAHOO!NEWS @http://dailynews.yahoo.com/fc lists all the top stories for the day. Full coverage is given to U.s. and world news as well as entertainment and sports. A great place to start for the current event homework assignment. Kids of all ages can be here.

MAGPORTAL @ http://www.magportal.com/ lets you into articles from 300 sources. All can be viewed for free. Allows you to make a specific magazine search or a specific publication search when you supply the publications by name. Excellent resource for high school.
