Teacher sites

The first teacher made web site that I found is Mrs. Flanagan’s First Grade class from Barrett Elementary Center in Cresco, Pennsylvania.

Grade Level: First

Subject: All subjects

Public School

Usefulness: Very accommodating for parents and children to use for linking into information pertinent for the daily and yearly schedule. Homework is assigned on the site for both students and parent awareness. Students who are absent can keep up with daily assignments.

Three Commendations:

Very attractive and age appropriate graphics are used. This feature encourages visitors to return often.

Easy to navigate. Students and parents who may not be tech-savy can find their way around this homepage.

Covers a wide spectrum of options for the user. These options include the following blocks:

  1. Our Schedule
  2. Classroom Tour
  3. Weekly Reminders
  4. School Calendar
  5. Spelling List
  6. Classroom Activities
  7. Tips for Parents
  8. Favorite Links
  9. Words, Words, Words

Three Recommendations:

Words, Words, Words is a site that offers key vocabulary for the basal reading series. Two options were given here; one is for a word list and the other for PowerPoint flash cards. The PowerPoint cards required you to have PowerPoint in order to read the text, The other option was not available.

Spelling List has 25 weekly, pre-determined spelling words. This setup doesn’t allow for enrichment, nor is it conducive to differential teaching.

Favorite Links is where browsers can navigate through a selected menu of sites. The reading site is very limited in regards to web pages to view. The Author’s Page is considerable limited as well especially since the teacher noted that each month a different author is displayed and studied.

Web Site number 2 comes Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District in California.

Grade Level: Elementary , Intermediate, and High School

Subjects: All

Public School

Usefulness: Attractive site from which anyone can find and click on to the grade level teachers. For instance, the Kindergarten corner has individual web sites for each of the six teachers. Some grade levels have more than six teachers. A person can get a general over-all view of this school district through the eyes of the teachers who have developed each individual homepage.

Three commendations:

At the bottom of the initial homepage located at http://www.pvpusd.k12.ca.us/teachweb/, the visitor can go into an archive built from classroom teachers who are no longer working in this particular district.. These sites are for the purpose of showing the many ways to illustrating various approaches to classroom instructional web pages.

For public information, the viewer can link on to learn more about the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District. This kind of information is always helpful for any parent who must enroll their child into a new district.

The page is attractive and the hyperlinks appear to all work properly which saves on frustration and lends itself to frequent satisfied returns for its users.

Recommendations:

The homepage could be made a little larger. The print is very small and therefore difficult to read. The visitor can be notified that there is more than just one initial page.

The teacher should include a current picture of her/his self for the sole purpose of exposure and familiarity. A personal picture adds a special touch to your homepage and makes it more personal and full of ownership.

Current and updated information about the individual school building is always a great idea. Again this touch adds a sense of belonging and personality to the site. Keep checking the hyperlinks to see that they work properly. This eliminates visitor frustration and encourages more frequent stops.
