Links for Montgomery County teachers to assist students of low-income families

 

        This website is for any Montgomery County teacher or professional who works with students of low socio-economic status. These links can be directed toward elementary, middle and high school grades. The 20 links below are ongoing and selected for different reasons. However, they each serve the purpose to help families, so that education can be the primary goal.

 

Free and Reduced Price Meals Frequently Asked Questions- This website contains answers about Montgomery County Public School’s Free and Reduced Meals Program, specifically who can apply. It is useful for financially needy families who are unaware of this program in their child’s school. Date visited-6/26/09

The British Journal of Social Work- This page is about how low socio-economic status children are at greater risk for sexual abuse. The Learning Disabilities Association of Montgomery County, MD- This page is helpful for students with learning disabilities. There are resources like counselors, tutors, a helpline, seminars and newsletters for parents with a learning disabled child. Home and Hospital Teaching- This website is for any student who is unable to attend a Montgomery County Public School due to injury or illness for an extended amount of time. Answers are given about professional teachers who will come to the home or hospital to teach that child, so that there is not a lack of learning. Behavioral Health and Crisis Services Web Site- This Department of Health and Human Services webpage is based in Montgomery County, MD. Addresses and phone numbers of places that deal with mental and behavioral crisis are useful for any age residents. Date visited- 6/26/09

Homelessness and Housing Support- This page provides details on homelessness prevention, programs for families who are in immediate danger of losing their home, emergency housing and shelters for women. The Salvation Army- The page that invites compassion, this nonprofit organization provides families in need with food, a car, and much more. This is another option for donating or receiving items for living. Doing the Most Good/ Christmas Charity- This page is part of The Salvation Army, specifically about how to help low income families during the Christmas holiday. During a time when people get busy with their own shopping, we need to remember those less fortunate. St. Martin’s Web.com- Social Concerns- This site informs how St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Gaithersburg, Maryland is helping those who are hungry. St. Martin’s Food Pantry and The Lord’s Table are examples of how they feed the community. You do not need to be a member of the church to donate or receive meals. Street Cards- This page is the Montgomery County coalition for the homeless. Addresses and phone numbers of medical offices, clothing stores and more can be printed off on small cards called “street cards.” This is ideal for students who might be embarrassed and need to bring home information quietly, or simply to keep in a pocket or purse. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline- This website is for anyone, anywhere who might be so sad that they want to end their life. Parents and children live with stress daily, but the message must be made clear: there is hope.
