Faculty In-service Powerpoint: "What's New in the Library?"

  Reflection

Multicolored folders. It was a last minute decision, but I knew it was important. Having attended numerous faculty in-services and having served on the technology committee at two different schools, I have received untold numbers of handouts. Although I might not be able to recall the handouts, I usually know if they were given to me in a particularly colored folder. I knew that when I presented my in-service entitled, "What's New in the Library?", passing out multicolored folders for the faculty to put all of the handouts in would make a big difference. I thoroughly enjoyed developing and presenting this "faculty staff development opportunity." Since I made the presentation in January, I was able to tailor it to fit the needs of specific staff members. For example, I wanted to remind the staff of the online databases to which our school subscribes. However, a few days before my presentation I had the opportunity to introduce one of the Language Arts teachers to Novelist, an online database available through the public library. As I was demonstrating it to her, I realized that it should also be included in the presentation. Not only did I explain Novelist's use to the entire faculty, I was able to reiterate the importance of taking advantage of all of the public library resources. Through my staff development opportunity the staff received friendly reminders of available resources, information about new books and resources, helpful handouts, and a colorful folder to boot!
