Putting a Stop to Soda

As elementary school students, you do not need to deal with the temptation of vending machines while going to and from class. However, the US Government has decided it’s time to get healthy in our public schools.

Read a recent article published in Time for Kids magazine entitled “Soda Fizzes Out of Schools” to find out more on this issue. Learn more about this topic and why some people are pushing so hard for healthy snack options in our schools.

Our school offers snacks to students after lunch has been served. Students pay for the snack separately and the snacks have little or no nutritional value. It has been suggested to Mrs. Jacobs that we replace the snacks currently being served in the snack line with healthy snacks such as granola bars, yogurt, fruits cups, and other healthy snack options.

On a separate sheet of paper, write a persuasive essay to Mrs. Jacobs regarding what you think the school should do about the snacks served in the snack line. Should they stay or get replaced? What are the reasons behind your opinion? Support your response with evidence from the text. Use the marker board notes you’ve taken to help focus your response.
