IMPORTANT COMPONENTS FOR
SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA WEB SITES
1) Purpose/Mission Statement - This is important because it lets the user know why
your school library media program is necessary. It provides a snapshot of what
the program is all about.
2) Reference Links - The user of the library often has a need to use reference
materials so the user of your web site will appreciate having a plethora of
references at his/her
fingertips. These would include encyclopedias,
thesauruses, dictionaries, and other similar materials and sites for locating
pertinent information.
3) Search Engine Links - The Internet is a vast resource, so anything the school
library media specialist can do to narrow what's out there reduces the amount of
time the user has to spend aimlessly surfing for just the right thing.
4) Recurring Events/Programs - These would be annual things like book fairs or
author visits. Ongoing
things like any kind of student-centered programs or other
special programs where the school library media center is a focal point should be
included. These things
are an advertisement of how the library media center is
an asset to the school's overall instructional program.
5) Link to Area Public Library - The school library will have a limited amount of
resources. By
providing a link to other area libraries such as the public library or
a college library, the user
will be instantly directed where to further his/her search.
6) Policies and Procedures - This is where all users of the library media center are
informed about how to utilize all the services that are offered. A map of the
different sections of the library would be an informative addition to this portion
of the web site. This would help users easily find what they need when they
visit the physical location and save time by not having to ask the library media
specialist.
7) Research Techniques - It is the role of the school library media specialist to
educate library users about research methods. The web site is an ideal
location to have these techniques at the user's fingertips when needed and
when the media specialist is not readily available.
8) Internet Safety Tips - The school library media specialist educates Internet
users about the dos and don'ts of Internet use. Having these tips on the web
site is a ready reminder and a convenient way to reach portions of the online
community that are untaught about these issues.
9) Access to Online Library Catalog - Having the school's library catalog on the
library web site offers the user an opportunity to search for necessary
materials from any place that has Internet access. This saves time because
the user can access the catalog 24 hours a day 7 days a week regardless of
whether or not the physical library is open or closed.
10) Resources - This section could cover numerous areas. These would include
previewed web sites, lessons, sites for teachers, magazines and other
publications, tips for how
to choose books, author study links, etc. In
this
area, users could find any and everything they need to obtain information
which has once again been narrowed and evaluated by the media specialist
for quality as well as to save the user time.
