Internet Search Engines Assignment by Jody Welin

These are the search engines that I found to be the easiest to use and most efficient.

Media Search Engines

1.     Lycos – This search engine had a very convenient feature. Once you clicked on a result that you wanted to visit, the results page went to a new window on the left side just like the Favorites window does. This search engine has a multimedia tab. Once on that page you can search for more specific video and audio clips.  http://www.lycos.com

2.     AOL – This search engine looks very clean and is easy to read. While displaying search results as most search engines do, this also has a side menu with options to further search your topic. This search engine worked very fast. This site offers MP3, audio, and video clips that are easy to access.    http://search.aol.com/aolcom/webhome

Kids Search Engines

  1. Yahooligans – Yahooligans is very colorful and friendly for children. They find it inviting. Parents have lots of control over their child’s internet experience and they are also given ideas and tips on how to make the internet a family adventure. I love the fact there is a teacher’s guide as well.  http://yahooligans.yahoo.com/

  1. Onekey – Of course, I am also a fan of Onekey. My students use it all the time and can actually find information faster than I can. I especially like the easy to find feature of reporting unacceptable sites. This helps Onekey stay on top of things. http://www.onekey.com/

News Search Engines

    1.  Yahoo – Yahoo news is my favorite. It offers news from   numerous sources like AFP, LA Times, Reuters, etc. The search     engine also has audio and video clips available. You can search         for stories based on sources as well as topic and location. Local        news is also easy to find. http://news.yahoo.com/

   2.   MSN - What I like about MSN is that it has a ton of settings to                 choose from under the “Settings” option. This gives you the        opportunity to customize MSN to make it easier for you      personally to read. They also provide a help menu for those that aren’t search engine savvy yet.  http://search.msn.com/

General Search Engines

  1. Dogpile – Can I just say WOW!! I have found my new personal search engine. I was unaware that this one even existed. It is going to save me so much time because of the fact that it combines the three top search engines and compares them. The Comparison Feature is excellent because you are able to isolate results based on which search engine it came from. http://www.dogpile.com/

  1. WebCrawler – This is another search engine that gives the comparison feature. This engine is easy to navigate with its ability to switch from web pages to images to audio to video to news results for the same topic. I also like the filter feature for parents. I have now found 2 general search engines that I did not now existed!!  http://www.webcrawler.com/

Travel Search Engines

  1. Yahoo – This is my first choice for travel. I like the fact that it has the option called Yahoo! FareChase. People are always looking for cheap travel prices and this is an easy way to track them. This site gives you a chance to see deals that are going on at that moment for selected cities. http://travel.yahoo.com/

  1. Google – I like the maps and directions feature of this search engine. Sometimes mapping sites don’t give the best directions but this one seemed to give the most direct route. That is an important time saver. Google is also very fast when in comes to loading maps and driving directions. The maps are very easy to read. http://www.google.com/
