Best General Search Engines

Google

http://www.google.com

I would highly recommend Google as your first stop for any Internet search.  Google is quick, easy, and to the point.  Using the toolbar at the top of the search box you can easily search for a variety of items including images, discussion groups,  news, shopping, and maps.  It also has a preference section where you can select your language choice and most importantly set up safe search filtering.  I would feel very comfortable using this search engine in my classroom, media center, or home.

Yahoo

http://www.yahoo.com

Very similar to Google, Yahoo supplies quick and comprehensive results.  There are tabs above the search box where you can seek out images, videos, yellow page listings, news, local information, and shopping.  What makes this search engine unique is that you can personalize it to fit your needs and interests.  This site also has safety and language features available.  I would rank Google a little higher just because it is straight forward and  more user friendly.

This is basically Yahoo, but the kids version.  Yahooligans is formatted to catch the interest of children and all sites provided are appropriate for kid use.  This site even has advertisements that are geared towards kids!  Like many other sites, Yahooligans includes a toolbar for kids to have quick access to topics of interest including a news topics section where issues and events of today and put into kid friendly slideshows.
