Cultures and human civilization change and evolve over time. As people begin to change their ways of life to adapt to their altering society, the core beliefs and myths change as well. The first religions built their myths around multiple god and goddesses, collectively called a pantheon. It was not until more recent times, historically speaking, that mythology has shifted to a single god.

 

For this activity, we will compare and contrast monotheism (one god) and polytheism (many gods). Go to each of the links below and read about monotheism and polytheism then complete the activities below.

1)            Write a brief definition of monotheism and polytheism.

 

2)            Create a pros and cons chart for monotheism and polytheism. Each section should contain at least five items.

 

3)            Identify at least three religions/cultures that practice monotheism and three that practice polytheism

 

4)            Write a brief paragraph explaining which type of myth structure appeals to you most and why.
