School Library Media Sites

Summer 2003

The following is a list of components I feel are necessary for a well-designed and appropriate web page for an Elementary School Library Media Specialist.

Ø An updated list of events and activities taking place in the media center (the entire web page needs to be kept updated!).

Ø An easily accessible list of recommended, current links to sites which can be used as resources for any assignments or research topics (this would include links to search engines, such as Yahooligans for kids).

Ø Any information about library resources currently available, also any new additions to the library collection.

Ø The web page should be simple and clear, using annotations along with any recommended sites or links.

Ø Links should be included for particular book subjects or authors, so that students can easily access books available in the library, as well as use the list to find other books they may enjoy by subject or author.

Ø There should be something unique about the web page, and there should be something to grab the attention of its audience (kids or parents) to make them want to visit the library! (Pictures would help with this!)

Categories and Sites to be used on the website:

• Research Links (providing links to good search engines or research topics for students)

• Book lists—What Should I Read Next? (providing books categorized by subject and author for kids to easily find another book they may enjoy)

• Activities/Events (updated for the students and community to know what is going on the school library)

• Sites to be included would be Yahooligans and LycosZone, for kids to use on research topics.

• Webquests would be another category to include, and teachers who have created these could post them on this site as well.
