Lori Van Order – SLM521 – Course Module #2 – Summer 2003

Integrating Technology in Special Subject Instruction

Objective: One objective of this activity is to help students to become familiar with various curriculum sites available on the web, and how to integrate them into instructional activities.

Objective:  Another objective is for the student to devise a plan to help a fellow “Special” teacher to implement technology in their instruction.

Introduction:  If you work in a school district, you are used to having a faculty of classroom teachers as well as “special” teachers. (Specials in this activity would include Library, Art, Phys Ed, and Music). This course has helped classroom teachers in developing ways to use technology in their own classrooms, but what about the teachers who teach specials in the school? We will explore ways for Special teachers to implement the web in their instruction.

Activity: View each of the following sites (organized by special subject).

Library

 http://www.rif.org/readingplanet/

http://awardbooks.hypermart.net/

Art

 http://www.artcyclopedia.com/

http://www.pbs.org/art21/

Music

 http://www.creatingmusic.com/

 http://www.nyphilkids.org/

Phys Ed

 http://www.pecentral.org/

http://www.pe4life.com/

Assignment:  Choose one of the sites from above, and write a plan to share the site with a fellow special teacher. Assume that the special teacher would be given access to a computer lab for a day if necessary. Be sure to include the following criteria in your plan:

1.     Name and citation of the website you chose

2.   Special teacher you would share the site with (and subject they teach)

3.   Briefly describe an idea for an activity or lesson the teacher could use to implement the site into their instruction

Additional Resources: The search engines listed below may be used to find a website other than those listed above.

www.google.com

www.yahoo.com

www.lycos.com

www.alltheweb.com

***Post your file to your web index page, and submit your website and plan to your Instructor.
