Connection with Library Curriculum

My mentors have often told me that being a librarian can be a lonely and thankless job. With no real team or department, media specialists have to work twice as hard to build connections with other staff members. Being that there is usually only one librarian per building, and considering the sad fact that most other faculty members don't have a clear understanding of what the demands of a media specialist's job actually are, it is easy to feel isolated and unappreciated in the library. The key to avoiding this fate is to make an effort to make connections and network with fellow media specialists physically, as well as virtually. Keeping this solid advice in mind, I took it upon myself to find an organization that would allow me to make connections with people who share my vision, goals, and passions for library media science. Joining the professional organization MEMO (Maryland Educational Media Organization) was a really smart move. Not only does my membership provide me with information about up coming events and professional opportunities, but I also was lucky enough to attend the fall conference (hooray for the member discount!). Attending the conference was a powerful experience. Not only did I get to hobnob with other media specialists and vendors and start to put faces to names, but I attended informational sessions that will really make my transition from classroom teacher to media specialist go more smoothly. My participation in this professional association gives me assurance that I will not be alone in the library.
