Stacy Ukishima – Newsletter Elective

Tech-LEARNING.com

This site offers, “resources for education technology leaders.”  There were several choices for newsletters to sign up for, including:

·        TechLEARNING News, “a bi-monthly update brought to you by Technology & Learning and the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN).”

·        IT Guy Alert, which offers tech support ideas and answers two times per month.

·        Professional Development QuickTips Alert, offering strategies for implementing staff development (also two times per month).

·        Site of the Day Alert, a newsletter that is sent out every Friday, and provides a list of recommended Web sites for teaching and learning.

I chose to subscribe to the Site of the Day Alert.  The sample issue that I reviewed provided five sites, including one teacher “school site of the week.”  The sites were all great; I had heard of two (Backflip and Rubistar), but hadn’t heard of the other two (Slave Rescue Quest and ExploreMath.com), which were both unique and could easily be integrated into a curriculum.  Slave Rescue Quest “places students in an authentic role as a young child in 1950s Baltimore,” and ExploreMath.com offers “multimedia activities that illustrates difficult math concepts with interactive simulations.”

Math Goodies

This site offers lessons, puzzles and homework related to math, in addition to other activities and articles.  I subscribed to the newsletter, and looked at some back issues.  The back issues provided annotations to math-related Web sites, updates on the Math Goodies newsletter and other links useful for planning math lessons and teaching math.

I also checked out many other newsletters – what a shocker that I got “lost” on the Web for two hours! – but these two seemed most interesting to me.  At some point, I may go back and sign up for some of the other newsletters suggested in the syllabus.
