Stationary
Bike/Cardiovascular Work-out
Introduction:
To maintain a healthy
lifestyle, a good cardiovascular routine is needed. There are several ways to obtain a cardio
workout. A few of the ways are: aerobic
exercise, running or jogging, swimming, step aerobics, and riding a
bicycle. A healthy heart rate increases
with activity then remains stable throughout the peak of the routine. The “cool down period” of the exercise, should
allow the heart rate to decrease to the normal resting heart rate for each
individual.
Activity:
Students should
visit the following websites and view the information provided about target
heart rates, physical activity, and cardiovascular workouts. While viewing these sites, students should
focus on the cardiovascular workout and how the heart rate changes throughout
the exercise.
Activity Links –
Exercise Prescription – There are an abundance
of links on this website, including, among others, those for beginners, weight
training, kinesiology, aerobic conditioning, and exercise and sport
psychology. The site also provides very
useful information about the importance of proper exercise habits. http://www.exrx.net/
Teacher’s Fitness Desk –
This website provides ideas for teaching children how to safely balance healthy
eating with daily exercise. The National
Heart and American Heart Associations helped sponsor this website. http://www.kidshealthandfitness.com.au/indexpre.html
Fitness Articles – This site provides
a number of various health and fitness articles. The topics include aerobic exercise, healthy
dieting, strength training, running and weekly fitness tips. http://www.timeforfitness.com/
Students should go
to each website and review the literature that is specifically based on cardiovascular
exercise and heart rate.
Exercise and Health – This website
is sponsored by The American Heart Association.
There are links including an exercise diary, where one can keep track of
his or her exercise progress, a fitness resources link, where one can read
frequently asked health and exercise questions. http://www.justmove.org/home.cfm
Assignment:
After reading the
information on the above links, students should:
-Make sure to begin with the resting heart
rate (heart rate before beginning the activity).
-Be
sure to represent the “cool down period” on your graph.
-Be
sure to tell what happens to heart rate as exercise increases and what happens
during the “cool down period.” Use the graph to identify the specific
correlation.
