Interpreting A Graph

 

Introduction:

 

Title IX, a landmark piece of legislation, was enacted in 1972 to guarantee equal rights between men and women participating in collegiate sports.   Because of this Act, women were finally given equal opportunity and funding to fulfill their athletic dreams. 

 

Activity:

 

Students are to go to the following website, review the language on Title IX, and complete the following assignment.  Following the literature on Title IX, this site offers a graph that compares women’s participation in sports before and after Title IX’s passage.

For this assignment, you will need to read the article and study the graph.  Then respond to the questions that refer specifically to the graph on a separate piece of paper.  Be sure to include your name and date.

 

 

 

1.  What conclusions can you draw from the graph above?  Explain.

 

2.  According to the graph, what is the trend in women’s participation in sports?  Why?

 

3.  Since this graph is only on data received through 1994, explain what you think has happened in women’s sports in the last 8 years (1994 – 2002)?  

 

4.  In your opinion, why do you think that Congress finally passed this legislation in 1971? 

 

5.  What are your predictions for both male and female participation in collegiate sports for the next 30 years?  Why?
