Pornography Elective Activity

Pornography on the Internet

Introduction:

The Internet contains much information for students to access.  However, certain websites are links to inappropriate adult material.  The people who create these sites try to lure students into their site by having tricky URL names.  For example, as stated in Art Wolinsky’s letter, some people buy defunct educational websites and turn them into pornographic sites.  Unfortunately, they often keep the same web address and both students and teachers enter the site not realizing what it is.   They click on a site thinking it will have educational tools and it may very well have illicit material.

The following list contains tips and suggestions for students and teachers to follow in case they accidentally come across an inappropriate website in school.

1. The first thing you should do if you enter an inappropriate site by accident is     immediately write down the address and give it to an authority figure.  If your teacher was the one who gave you the address, tell him or her immediately so that he or she can warn others not to log onto that site.

2.   To get out of this site, first try to close it by clicking on the “X” located in the upper right hand corner of the screen.  If other pornographic web pages continue to appear, you may need to keep clicking on the “X.”

3.   If that does not allow you to leave the site, you should go to the File Icon/Bar located on the top menu of your screen.  Click on that and go down to the Close Option.  The screen should then close.

4.   If that still does not work, try turning off the monitor so that you are no longer viewing the inappropriate material.  Then continue to shut the power off from the CPU and restart the computer.

5.   Make sure to notify your teacher of all your steps so he or she can assist you and take any necessary actions to avoid this site in the future.

6.   In addition to notifying your teacher, you should also notify the Technology Technician or Media Specialist, of the site so he or she can put a “block” on it in the future.

7.   Overall, when accessing the Internet at school or at home, be aware of what sites you are entering.  Be wary of any names that sound inappropriate to avoid possible problems.
