Publishing Student Work on the Web

Dear Parents/Legal Guardians,

            Carroll County High School encourages students to produce original, high-quality works that will further their educational goals.  By publishing exemplary student productions on the World Wide Web, we have the opportunity to share our students’ ideas within a global community.  While recognizing the educational achievements of our students, we must also take measures to mitigate the potential risks associated with these benefits.  Foremost to student publishing is the protection of privacy and assurance of appropriate, quality postings.  These Guidelines for Student Online Publishing will be followed to protect students and the educational community:

  • The Internet Committee for Carroll County High School must approve all potential websites where student work may be published.  Chosen websites will be evaluated for educational purposes, appropriate content and privacy policies.
  • While engaging in student publishing, all parties must adhere to the general “Acceptable Use Policy for Internet Access” as detailed in student handbooks.
  • Last names of students will NOT appear with their work.  First names may appear if students request and agree to that disclosure.
  • Contact information posted with student work will include the teacher’s name and email address.
  • BOTH parents AND students must give signed permission for every submission.
  • Teachers must complete a Quality Indicators checklist prior to every submission which includes:

ü      an excellent score based on the “6-Trait Model” for writing: Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions;

ü      any required permissions for copyrighted materials, including graphics;

ü      accurate and appropriate content - profanity, obscene comments, sexually explicit material, and expressions of bigotry, racism, and hate are NOT appropriate;

ü      properly cited resources that have been evaluated for reliability; and,

ü      authentication that links to other web sites contain appropriate content and minimal commercial advertising.

Student’s Agreement:  I have read and understand the Acceptable Use Policy for Internet Access in my handbook and the above Guidelines for Student Online Publishing.
