Online Newsletters to Support English Teachers

After previewing some archives, I subscribed to Education World’s Teacher Lesson Plans and the K12 Newsletters from Educational Cyber Playground.  The weekly Teacher Lesson Plans Newsletter contains lesson ideas for a variety of subjects and grade levels.  For example, I found a recent lesson entitled Teaching Grammar without the Hammer.  Education World provides a convenient process to subscribe and specific directions for users who wish to unsubscribe.  Education World also offers eight other newsletters devoted to topics such as educational headlines and humor.  As a new teacher, these two additional resources will help keep me grounded and updated on current issues.  Teachers have the option to only subscribe for each specific newsletter, thereby reducing information overload about less relevant topics.

In the K12 Newsletter archive, I was impressed by the weekly email provided by Web English Teacher.  Lesson plan ideas were provided with a brief, concise description and a convenient link to the specific details. For example, I found lessons about Franz Kafka and William Faulkner.  Within the email, only the author, title, and link were provided.  This allows teachers to quickly scan an email, filtering for subjects related to their specific content focus. These two new free additions will complement the email newsletter that I already receive from the National Council for Teachers of English (NCTE) which requires an annual membership fee.
