Scavenger Hunt

Objective:  Students will be able to develop an online scavenger hunt for a grade level of their choice.

Objective: Students will be able to encourage their classrooms to develop skills using the internet through the scavenger hunt they develop.

Introduction:

Everyday we use the internet to get information, find directions to a new restaurant or check our email.  Think back to some of the first times you were able to use the internet and how much time it took you to learn how to navigate through the millions of pieces of information you could find.

Students may have grown up with the internet at their finger tips at all times but not all of them understand how to find the information they are looking for.  Other students may not have spent very much time on the internet because they do not have a computer at home and need to learn how to navigate through the World Wide Web.  Through the activity that you develop students should gain some insight and confidence when using the internet.

Activities:

Visit the following scavenger hunts to see how some of them are set up.  You can also find other scavenger hunts on the web to get a better understanding of how you may want to develop your own.

  • Explore the Fantastic Forest – View a scavenger hunt in which students answer the questions with a paper and pen but find their answers on the web.  http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/ngexplorer/0201/adventures/

  • Ann Frank – This scavenger hunt has a list of questions students are to answer with the appropriate link to where they can find the answer.  http://teacher.scholastic.com/products/instructor/May04_cyberhuntkids.htm

Assignment:

For this assignment you will develop a scavenger hunt for the subject and grade of your choice.  You should include at least ten questions.  Remember what the purpose of the scavenger hunt is depending on the grade level you choose.  Early elementary students may simply be getting acquainted with the internet while high school students are really searching for specific facts.  You can choose what type of format you would like.  Make sure to include hyperlinks to the appropriate site where students can find the answers to scavenger hunt questions that you make.

Submission:

Post your activities as an html file to your FTP folder, create a link to the file on your index page, and send your instructor an email notification containing a working hyperlink to the assignment (not to your index page) and the assignment file's URL. Make sure the subject line of your email is in the following format: SLM521-lastname-Assignment Title - elective # (if applicable).

Questions are vague; there are no ten questions included.

Scavenger hunt questions are appropriate but somewhat challenging for classroom level.

Hyperlinks

Only about half of the hyperlinks are working correctly.  May need a more direct website for question being answered.

All links are working and allow student to travel to the correct, appropriate web page to find answers.
