Because You Already Have Enough To Worry About!
Introduction:  Below are a list of what I find to be the top sites for 7th and 8th grade lesson plans for social studies teachers that I have seen.  If you are looking to spice up old lessons, or find new ideas for ANY social studies unit in the Maryland curriculum for social studies, this is a great place to start!!!

Lesson Planet - HUGE listing of social studies lesson plans with subcategories from economics to world hunger.  You have to become a member to access these lessons, but you can become a "Bronze-level" member for free and receive the top 3 lessons in each category and other useful teaching tools.  Since I've become a member, I receive only the lessons that match my specific grade level (7/8 social studies).  Date accessed: 10/14/04 http://www.lessonplanet.com/search/Social_Studies

SCORE- 7th Grade Medieval World and also SCORE- 8th Grade US/Geography - These lesson plans come from the curriculum from the state of California, but align perfectly with Maryland standards in social studies.  Find lesson plans that connect directly to the Byzantine, Islam, and Europe, and other units for 7th grade and  American Revolution, Westward Expansion, Immigration and other units for 8th grade.  VERY USEFUL!! Date accessed:  10/15/04 http://score.rims.k12.ca.us/grade7/index.html and http://score.rims.k12.ca.us/grade8/index.html

Library of Congress Teacher Page
- This page allows you to find lessons for American History and Literature, many of which incorporate the use of primary sources.  Although there are many lessons for high school students, there are plenty of 8th grade lessons to chose from.  Date accessed:  10/15/04 http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/ndlpedu/lessons/theme.html

Mr. Donn's Pages - The best feature of this site is how the MANY lesson plans in this collection are divided into categories and subcategories, saving teachers from reading through lists of unwanted lesson plan topics.  Find both US History and Medieval History lesson plans that connect to the Maryland State curriculum for social studies!  Date accesssd:  10/15/04 http://members.aol.com/donnandlee/SiteIndex.html#History

EDsitement - Collection of lesson plans funded by the National Endowment for the Humanites.  Search through subcategories and by grade level to find plenty of lesson plan ideas AND helpful websites!  Date accessed:  10/15/04 http://edsitement.neh.gov/tab_lesson.asp?subjectArea=3

Educator's Reference Desk -Select a subcategory to find an alphabetized listing of lesson plans and grade levels.  There are plenty of useful middle school lessons to choose from on a wide variety of social studies topics.  Date accessed:  10/15/04 http://www.eduref.org/cgi-bin/lessons.cgi/Social_Studies
