Plagiarism

Types:

Copy & Pasting- When parts of a source are directly lifted (copied) and pasted into another document without quotations and a referencing

Word Switching- Taking a sentence or parts of a source and rearranging some of the words around without citing the reference.

Style- Following a sources outline, style, flow or reasoning order.

Metaphor- Using a sources metaphors to illustrate important ideas without giving a citation to the original author

Idea- Taking a creative idea or suggestion to a problem that is not public domain information without citing the author or reference.

Prevention:

  1. Educate students of the types of plagiarism and the consequences.

  2. Teach how to properly use quotations, paraphrases and citations.

  3. Provide a list of specific and clear assignment instructions.

  4. Include unique requirements (ie. Oral presentation, varied resources)

  5. Require an annotated bibliography

  6. Allow adequate time for students to complete the assignment

Recognition:

  1. Know the clues that may suggest plagiarism.

    1. Lack of references

    2. Abnormal or mixed styles of work quality

    3. Off topic
