Contractions Classification

The three types of skeletal muscle contractions that we will explore are concentric, eccentric, and isometric. The actin and myosin fibers that are a component of the muscle generate tension during cross-bridge cycling. They may either shorten, lengthen or stay the same length when producing tension against a resistance. Explore the following sites to learn about the different types of muscle contractions and answer the following questions. As you learn about the different classifications, think about what types of contractions are mostly used in different activities/exercises.
1) In your own words, briefly define each type of muscle contraction.
2) Out of the three classifications, which type of contractions would you think are the most common.
3) For each example activity, place a check under the appropriate muscle contraction category.
