Translation Assignment:

My Elective for Week Two

 

Translation may be a very valuable tool within instructional situations.  Below is a list of five examples that demonstrate why or how:

 

  1. Translation may be used with ESL students. – A foreign speaking student who only recently has moved to the United States and is unable to speak English may be permitted to complete assignments in his or her native tongue and then translate them into English via an online resource.  As the student adjusts and language skills improve, translation will become less of a crutch, whereas in the beginning it was almost necessary.
  2. Translation is helpful in an advanced foreign language class. – With students in upper level foreign language courses, who have acquired significant skills in the foreign language, teachers may demonstrate through translation what is lost as one moves from one language to another.  Because many books, movies, etc. are translated into numerous languages, it is important for students to realize that particular plays on words, jokes, etc. may not be carried over exactly into another language. 
  3. Translation may be helpful in an inquiry lab or a course on cultural diversity. – Students required to complete projects on various cultures may incorporate into their presentations examples of the languages from those cultures they research.  It often is interesting for students to view or hear examples of words from different languages. 
  4. In a grammar course translation may demonstrate varying sentence structures.  – Teachers of English grammar may note to students that each language has its own rules and requirements.  Translation may provide examples of languages who use either the same or different sentence structures as those found in English. 
  5. Translation would be very helpful in a communication situation between school personal and foreign-speaking families.  In parental conferences during which the parents involved do not comprehend English, translation would be necessary in order that teachers and school administrators communicate effectively a child’s behavior or academic performance.

 

 

As I speak Spanish rather proficiently, I chose to translate an excerpt from a Central American Newspaper, which I located on the Internet Public Library site (htt://www.ipl.org/div/news).  I selected from the Guatemalan newspaper La Hora, an articled titled “A Tragic Accident in Zone 10.”  Using the Prompt Reverso website (http://translation2.paralink.com/), I translated the article from Spanish into English and then from English into both German and French.

Trágico accidente en zona 10

Dos vehículos que corrían a alta velocidad chocaron en la 1a avenida y 2a calle de la zona 10, a consecuencia de lo cual murió Beltetón Alejandro Toledo García, de 24 años, y tres más quedaron heridos en centros asistenciales.
Un reporte de la Policía señala que Toledo García piloteaba el automóvil P-687176 y lo acompañaban Hugo Eduardo Morán Mazariegos y Daniel Godínez Chacón. Los tres quedaron gravemente heridos y fueron llevados al Hospital General San Juan de Dios, donde murió Toledo García.
El primer automóvil chocó contra la camioneta P-25435, conducida por Rolando Alberto Estrada García, quien también está herido pero recluido en un centro asistencial privado de la zona 10, bajo custodia policial, ya que será sometido a un proceso judicial por homicidio, lesiones y daños.
Las autoridades informaron que el fallecido pudo ser el causante de la colisión debido a que estaba bajo efectos alcohólicos. Aparte de ello, no tenía licencia para manejar auto, pero de todas formas el informe señala que el tribunal que conozca
del caso tendrá que determinar el grado de responsabilidad de los protagonistas del fatal impacto.

 

 










English Translation:

 

Tragic accident in zone 10

Two vehicles that were running to high speed shocked in her(it) 1a avenue and 2a street of the zone 10, as a result of which Beltetón Alejandro died Toledo García, of 24 years, and three more they remained injured men in welfare centers.

A report of the Police indicates that Toledo García was guiding the car P-687176 and Hugo Eduardo Morán Mazariegos and Daniel Godínez Chacón were accompanying it. The three remained seriously wounded and were taken to the God's General San Juan Hospital, where there died Toledo García.

The first car hit against the light truck P-25435, led by Rolando Alberto Estrada García, who also is hurt but imprisoned in a welfare center deprived of the zone 10, under police custody, since it will be submitted to a judicial process by homicide, injuries and hurts(damages).

The authorities informed that the deceased could be the causer of the collision due to the fact that it (he,she) was under alcoholic effects. Apart from it, it(he,she) did not have license to handle the car, but of all forms the report indicates that the court that should know about the case will have to determine the degree of responsibility of the protagonists of the fatal impact.

 

 

English to German Translation:

 

Tragischer Unfall in Zone 10

Zwei Wagen, die zu hoher Geschwindigkeit erschüttert in ihr (es) 1a Zugang und 2a Straße der Zone 10, infolge dessen starteten, der Beltetón Alejandro Toledo García, 24 Jahre, und noch drei starb, sie blieben verletzte Männer in Wohlfahrt-Zentren.

Ein Bericht der Polizei zeigt an, dass Toledo García die Autoseite 687176 und Hugo Eduardo Morán Mazariegos führte und Daniel Godínez Chacón es begleitete. Die drei blieben ernsthaft verwundet und wurden nach Allgemeinem San Juan des Gottes Krankenhaus genommen, wo dort Toledo García starb.

Der erste Autoerfolg(Autotreffer) gegen die leichte Lastwagen-Seite 25435, geführt durch Rolando Alberto Estrada García, der auch verletzt aber in einem Wohlfahrt-Zentrum ausgeschlossen von der Zone 10, unter Polizeiaufsicht eingesperrt wird, da es einem gerichtlichen Prozeß durch Totschlag(Mörder), Verletzungen und Schmerzen (Beschädigungen) unterworfen wird.

Abgesondert davon, es (er, hatte sie) Lizenz nicht, um das Auto zu behandeln, aber aller Formen(Formulare) zeigt der Bericht an, dass das Gericht(Platz), das über den Fall wissen(kennen) soll, den Grad der Verantwortlichkeit von den Hauptfiguren des tödlichen Einflusses wird bestimmen müssen.

 

 

English to French Translation:

 

Accident tragique dans zone 10

Deux véhicules qui couraient pour haut précipiter choqué dans elle (cela) 1a l'avenue et 2a la rue de la zone 10, suite à lequel Beltet ó N Alejandro est mort Toledo Garc í A, de 24 ans et encore trois ils sont restés des hommes blessés dans des centres de bien-être.

Un rapport de la Police indique que Toledo Garc í Un guidait la voiture P-687176 et Hugo Eduardo Morán Mazariegos et Daniel God í Nez Chac ó N l'accompagnait. Les trois sont restés sérieusement blessés et ont été pris à San Juan Général de Dieu l'Hôpital, où est là mort Toledo Garc í A.
