This page involves a lesson module designed to improve your students' searching skills in regard to various websites; students are asked to log onto particular sites and to search for specific information.
Objectives:
1. Students will complete a Scavenger Hunt using specific
literature-related websites, in order to answer questions on poets/authors.
2. Students will search specified websites to locate specific information, in order to improve their online searching skills.
3. Students will browse and navigate between numerous websites in order to increase their familiarity with the functioning of URLs and links.
Introduction:
In our booming world of technology it is vital that students
understand and become familiar with the web and the many resources it offers.
To get comfortable navigating amongst various websites, we'll be going on a
short Scavenger Hunt, in search of some important information on a variety of
significant literary figures. Hold onto your hats, and we'll begin our
venture!
Activity:
Our journey will commence at Ketzle.com
where we will learn about America's poet, Robert Frost. We will navigate
then to LiteratureOnline, where
we will find many significant literary figures, including Charles Dickens,
George Orwell and James Joyce. It is here that we will meet the famous
Stephen Crane. From this location, we will travel to
AmericanPoems.com. Here we will
find the homes of a number of significant poets, ranging from T.S. Eliot and
Ralph Waldo Emerson to Emily Dickinson and Sylvia Plath.
At each of the sites on which we land, it is important to take the time to browse and to explore all of the information available, as this will aid in our quest to complete the Scavenger Hunt! The more familiar we are with the various sites, and the more comfortable we become traveling to and from each location, the more quickly we will be able to complete our search.

After locating all of the required information for your Scavenger Hunt, select a topic in which you are interested from one of the above websites. Using further information from that website, or your own internet search, write a one-page report on the topic of your choice.
Be sure to include the URLs of any websites from which you obtain information about your topic.
