Collaborative Projects for Elementary Grades

 

 

Journey North Weather and Migration- This site offers students an opportunity to gather data from a school weather station or other chosen source and look at it from a migrating bird’s point of view.  Other classes send in their weather reports and migration observations for all to view.  It’s a great way to experience spring in another part of the country.  Date visited- 5/26/2005. http://www.learner.org/jnorth/weather/index.html

 

The Official Flat Stanley Project- This project is one that combines literature with the old fashioned chain letter.  Students have a ball imagining what their Flat Stanley might be doing at another school.  The classes can report on their Flat Stanley’s trip and post to the site.  This can be used to discuss geography, travel, journaling and many other topics. I Lost My Tooth- This project involves the emailing of lost tooth information to all of the participating classes.  All kids are fascinated by loose teeth.  What better way to slip graphing, geography and writing into the students’ day.  Date visited- 5/26/2005. http://www.onr.com/schoolhouse/teeth.html

 

GSH GeoGame Project- This project involves classes sending in their community’s specifications such as latitude, longitude, points of interest, etc.  They can then receive clues about other communities and using research, locate the town; a fun way to use research skills. The CERES S’COOL Project- This is a cloud observation and reporting project.  After registration, information regarding the description of conditions is sent to each class.  Students post their observations and can see what is observed in other areas as well as compare with the satellite photos from their area.  Date visited- 5/26/2005.

Endangered Animals- This site describes the project as classes sharing reports on endangered animals that live in their area.  This helps students with research, writing skills and geography.  Date visited- 5/26/2005. http://www.tenan.vuurwerk.nl/indexusa.htm

 

Global Grocery List Project-

This project has students compiling information about the grocery prices in their community and sharing those on the web.  Students and teachers alike will find the differences interesting even between cities relatively close together. SchoolWorld International Cookbook Project- Cooking is one way that teachers can introduce other cultures into the classroom.  It is also an excellent way to use math skills, and develop reading for performance skills.  This site is a recipe exchange.  Classes submit recipes from their local culture and a cookbook is being compiled. Westward HO! - This site offers students the opportunity to travel the Oregon Trail over a 5 week period.  They each assume provided identities in virtual families, where they will help make decisions while on the trail.  There are weekly cyber trail meeting for each group.  Students will be engaged in a fascinating role playing way of learning about the US western expansion.  Date visited- 5/26/2005. http://www.cyberbee.com/wwho/

 

The Day I Was Born- This project combines technology, research and organization of data with history.  Students report interesting events occurring on the day they were born.  The site guides the students to the proper web pages to find this information and walks them through the reporting process.  Date visited- 5/26/2005. http://www.stphilipneri.org/teacher/dayiwasborn/
